It was a hell of a year for the smartphone industry, and in 2012 produced some of the greatest innovations and the most unique to date. More important than increasing the pixel density or additional processing cores, however, is the progress we have seen in the quality of non-flagship devices. Before 2012, buying a smartphone on a budget meant that you would have to make some sacrifices in terms of serious hardware and software, and if you were a customer or a small regional carrier, you might as well buy a Tracfone. All that has changed, though, and today we are seeing more and more impressive and internal designs hitting the entry and mid-range market.
Motorola deserves a lot of recognition for it, because it alone has changed the way I thought of non-headlight units with their recent Droid RAZR RAZR M. M blew me away in terms of how it performed and how Price looked stunning - it was like a mid-level device with specifications that could have easily landed plateau territory on any other carrier. Fortunately, Motorola thought the same thing, and made an almost identical and equally impressive Electrify the M, range more impressive U.S. Cellular.
